Description
This psalm proclaims the universal reign of Jesus, who comes as Jehovah to judge the peoples of the world fairly. All nations are called to worship, and to proclaim his salvation.
Commentary
This psalm proclaims the universal reign of Jesus, who comes as Jehovah (the LORD) to judge the peoples of the world fairly (v10,13). In this context, which is an end-time context, it calls upon all the peoples of the earth to sing a new song of praise to him, and to proclaim his salvation.
Mike Bickle, in 150 Chapters on the End Times, comments on this psalm, "Singing a new song is referenced nine times in Scripture (Ps. 33; 40; 96; 98; 144 149; Isa. 42; Rev. 5; 14). In each reference, with the possible exception of Ps. 40, the scope of the song is global. It includes humanity and creation in context to Jesus coming as Judge of the earth. The new song (Isa. 42:10, Rev. 5:8-14) declares the new things (Isa. 42:9) before they come to pass, namely, the universal recognition of Jesus as Yahweh resulting in saints ruling with Him on the earth."
In verse 11 to 12, the call to worship is extended to all of creation. According to Romans 8:20-22, creation will be redeemed along with humanity, "For the creation was subjected to futility – not willingly but because of God who subjected it – in hope 21 that the creation itself will also be set free from the bondage of decay into the glorious freedom of God’s children. 22 For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers together until now." This Psalm is very similar to Psalm 98.
