Exodus Route

The Real Exodus Route

Traditionally it has been assumed that the crossing of the Red Sea was actually a crossing of one of the Bitter Lakes, and that the desert wanderings of the Exodus took place in what is known today as the Sinai Peninsula (Wikipedia link: The Exodus). Consequently, place names that appear in the Exodus story are traditionally placed on the map to fit with these assumptions.

The 1992 discovery of the real Mount Sinai in north-western Saudi Arabia by Jim and Penny Caldwell changes a lot of assumptions. Mount Sinai is identified as Jebel Maqla, in the mountain range known as Jebel Al-Lawz. In light of this, and taking the biblical account of the Red Sea crossing seriously, it is more likely that the Red Sea crossing was across the Gulf of Aqaba, possibly at the Straits of Tiran.
